Located in the East River Valley, early settlers in the 1860s came to this region for its beaver trapping and coal and silver mines. After the mining boom ended, the town was revived once the ski area of Crested Butte Mountain was built in the 1960s. It has also been designated as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado.
