Golden is the county seat of Jefferson County, nestled against the foothills. Golden's name gives insight into its roots in gold mining in the mid-nineteenth century. Interstate 70 leads to the southern part of Golden while Highway 93 runs along the western side.

The Colorado School of Mines and the Coors Brewing Company both make their home in Golden, along with the Colorado Railroad Museum. Downtown Golden boasts a historic district complete with the distinctive sign that spans between buildings with orange letters, "Howdy Folks! Welcome to Golden."
