Fort Garland, Colorado

Overview:

Fort Garland is the first town that one encounters when traveling west after having crossed over La Veta Pass in the Sangre de Cristo Range. It is affectionately referred to as the "Gateway to the San Luis Valley". Fort Garland was once commanded by legendary Kit Carson and had a battalion of over 100 men who served to protect the earliest settlers in the San Luis Valley. Encompassing only .37 square miles, Fort Garland offers the nice small town feel.

The Fort Garland Museum is rich in history. There are many events to attend at the museum or one can simply take advantage of a guided tour. Another nearby attraction is the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Once you enter the park you will find that there is an array of outdoor activities to enjoy.
