In 1880, Paonia was settled by Samuel Wade and William Clark, however not officially incorporated until 1902. The town was named after the peony roots that Samuel Wade brought with him. Wade wanted to name the town "Paeonia" but the post office wouldn't allow the extra vowel, therefore Paeonia became Paonia.
